Sad, really sad.

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 16 March 2012 07:52 (A review of Dexter)

This show has a great main character portrayed by a more than good enough actor capable of getting it right when they ask him to. It also has a interesting idea to work from so how could they get it wrong?

Everybody loves Dexter so I guess they didnĀ“t but this is a flawed attempt to make a great show to me. This is my particulary opinion and I guess you wont think the same but please dont hate me for it.

So, Dexter, the character, is good enough and Hall (who I loved in 6 feets under) makes it great. Ok, here comes the bullshit: The scripts are full of soapy run-of-the-mill crap and lame characters and the producers dont seem to know how to hire a good actor (well, Carpenter is Ok). They take a great premise and drag it down to the dirt until killing everything that could have made this show special.

My guess is that they wanted this show to be viewable for everyone not just freaky guys (like me?). All that soap killed it.

Sad.

PS: To all who love this show... IĀ“m really happy for you, seriously. I wish I could love it too but I just cant :(

Not enough but a pretty good effort

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 5 March 2012 10:38 (A review of Beginners)

I must say that this movie tries too hard for itĀ“s own convenience. It tries too hard to create lovable not-really-believable characters that you would love to have as friends (scratch that, you would love to BE them) and it tries to hard to hit that soft only one-tear jerker nerve we all have but we just dont use a lot. The filmakers get it done all right but you can almost see their continous effort behind every handcrafted emotion, every voice-over and every hipsty smile.

Is a nice movie with some fair acting and filmed with elegance but itĀ“s nothing more than that. It has a european feeling (meaning what well educated but not really traveled soft americans like to think is an european feeling) that can gets on your nerves or make you fall in love.

In any case itĀ“s a summer love: YouĀ“ll try not to forget it but you will.

No Magic here

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2012 07:24 (A review of Hugo)

This is a bad movie.
Bad, really bad.
Mind you! I expected little from this but I got even less.
The characters are bland, the acting is laughable and even the colors are way out of balance!

The story development goes from nothing really happens to nothing ever happened with some I-just-dont-care and please-kill-me in between. The script tries to get some amelie-ish feeling without any luck or inteligence leaving the secondary characters orphaned to die alone and rot. The main course of the story could have been developed in an interesting manner but it just tumbles along the sidewalk for hours and then wraps it all without mercy.

It tried to be something more than a kidĀ“s movie and ended being just rubbish. Sorry Martin but you just missed this shot but hey! nobody seems to care! Some day in one or three years a lot of people is gonna watch this movie again and think to themselves "what did I liked back then that I cant find now?"

ThereĀ“s no magic in this movie, only characters telling you that there is.

Tries but fails

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 13 February 2012 12:52 (A review of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro)

ItĀ“s not really that bad but lets you down. It could be great with, i dont know, more time? more experience? more money? who knows.

At itĀ“s best (meaning = action scenes) its just wonderful but the bad character presentation, weak story and slow moments drag this movie down.

ItĀ“s a weird feeling giving a harsh (not so harsh, ok) review to any of MiyazakiĀ“s work but I feel this deserves it.

IĀ“m sorry sensei. I truly am.

Good but...

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 28 January 2012 12:13 (A review of The Descendants)

Is nice to watch Clooney working under a different register and it is a really good movie but...

Yeah: but. ThereĀ“s a bunch of little sad "buts" if you look closely.

Some "buts": It talks about so many things and gets so few of them nailed that itĀ“s a shame. Family relations are underworked and character development (a crucial aspect in this story) is hinted but in the end missing as you are supposed to believe that the characters and their relations change but you dont really see that change. The issues that the movie brings to you are important although they feel too distant to connect with you.

Some good things: The characters are rounded and believable enough (only enough) and it has good acting and a great subtle sense of rhythm as thereĀ“s always something going forward story-wise although you might think it doesnt. ItĀ“s a emotional movie with a bunch of wet eyes moments but they are well used and dont feel overplayed (I hate to cry and feel cheated at the same time).

ItĀ“s one of those movies when I guessed it was based on a novel when I saw it (and it was). If you can guess that its always a bad sign.

Light Fun

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 11 January 2012 08:21 (A review of Squid Girl Series Part 1)

I would have never expected to laugh at this!
ItĀ“s so stupid, lame and cute that you cant help to love it.

Probably the only tentacle-heavy anime that isnĀ“t hentai.

Light fun.

Impossible, yeah.

Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 5 January 2012 12:02 (A review of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol)

Tom Cruise was just ok in this movie, Pegg was a lil better and everyone else was really bad (special mention to "the girl", Paula Patton: she was horrible).

The worst in this movie are the characters and the implausible (yes even for an action movie) history. The bad guy has no charisma and no one can care enough to hate him. The characters are unidimensional with only enough room for a twist and no meat. There are also a lot of secondary characters that add near to nothing to the story, the action or the movie.

A waste of some good action scenes and a waste of a rather acceptable Cruise. This and the good sense of rhythim (some times too over the top but good enough) are the best of the film.

The fact that the critics seem to like this movie (metacritic sevetythree) I think itĀ“s because they (we) are longing for the good olĀ“ times of action movies in this popcorn sea of epic fantasy puber magic.

IĀ“m giving this a 60 for the exact same reason.

Cute Happy Movie

Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 31 December 2011 09:22 (A review of The Shop Around the Corner)

James Stewart as cute and adorable as always (perhaps a lil more grumpy) and some funny situations. The script skips the main characters conflict nearly altogether but I guess thatĀ“s the way the movies were made back then.

ItĀ“s a happy movie to watch.

This could be better, but itĀ“s good enough

Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 29 December 2011 07:05 (A review of The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret)

This is a fun concept and has some good strong suits in its favor but... yeah, thereĀ“s a big but.

The humor relies only in 1 ongoing joke: a itĀ“s a big messy good joke. ItĀ“s the kind of joke that could make a lot of people nervous (this is not a show for people who cant endure some spanish shame) but the worst thing is this: itĀ“s only 1 big joke.

This kind of humor works in good crescendos in theater comedies and farses but I dont think this can work as intended through one full (although short) tv show.

EDIT: After watching the second season: this is with no doubt the most hardcore tv show IĀ“ve ever watched. The second season changes the main joke a bit btw. The ending is just... brutally unexpected.

Season 1: Great Potential

Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 29 December 2011 06:28 (A review of The Boondocks)

Low production quality, although standard for anime-esque shows, takes this first season from superb to fine. I know the message is the meat and potatos here but this still looks half cooked.

Great show, great characters, irregular voice acting and scripts. I hope this problems will be polished out in the second season and I will be in true love with this show.

So much potential!
